At age 15 he had an agent for his acting career, and his first role was in the Canadian TV series “Degrassi: The Next Generation.” After appearing in a total of 145 episodes, Drake decided to pursue his true passion, music. This led Drake to create a mixtape called “Room for Improvement,” which included collaborations with artists like Lupe Fiasco and Trey Songz. He hired top music producers in Canada and released his mixtape which sold 6,000 copies. This was followed by a second mixtape called “Comeback Season' with production from superstar Kanye West. The single “Replacement Girl” was the first song to be featured in a music video on BET from an unsigned artist. This was the first breakthrough for Drake and paved the way for Lil Wayne to invite Drake to open “Tha Carter III” tour. He would go on to release more mixtapes, each being a bigger success than the last, and a bidding war ensued. The winner, Young Money Entertainment, signed Drake to their label in June 29, 2009. Studio albums like “Thank Me Later,” “Take Care,” “Views,” and “More Life” would all go on to be huge success.
As of 2017, Drake has earned a total of 3 Grammy Awards, two from the song “Hotline Bling” and one Best Rap Album for “Take Care.” He’s added another title now, business owner as stakeholder in endeavours like OVO Sound, his own record label and Virginia Black, a bourbon-based whiskey company. He’s reach goes beyond music, making multiple appearances in shows like Saturday Night Live and films like “Think Like a Man Too” and “Ice Age: Continental Drift.” This multi talented artist is just getting started and will no doubt be considered one of the great ones when it’s all said and done.
Since departing his gig as an actor on the Canadian teen drama series Degrassi: The Next Generation, Drake has been making hit records since his 2007 mixtape "Room for Improvement." An artist who's versatility comes across on every track, switching back and forth between abrasive hip hop lyricism and technique with soulful R&B hooks, Drake is a force in the music industry and you wouldn't know it with the number of hit songs, but he's only been doing it for ten years.
Aubrey Drake Graham was born October 24, 1986 in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Born to an African American Catholic Father from Memphis, Tennessee and a white Jewish Canadian Mother, there is no question his multicultural upbringing is reflective in his music. He grew up in a multicultural neighborhood Oakwood Vaughan where he attended Vaughan Road Academy. It was there were he discovered his love of acting and the arts. He dropped out of school to pursue an acting career. He would later earn his high school degree in 2012.
"There were people who incorporated melody before me, but I would deem myself the first person to successfully rap and sing."
