+ BERLIN MUSEUM
PERMANENT LOAN OF 100 WORKS
MARCH 17, 2021 BY: JC RODRIGUEZ
Recognized as one of the most important and influential German artists of his generation, Gerhard Richter is considered by many, the best painter of his generation. A series of paintings made by the acclaimed artist dealing with the Holocaust have now been permanently loaned to the Berlin Museum currently under construction. Richter vowed to never sell these paintings and now instead has given them to be seen by the world. Richter is known to prefer his work be sold to museums rather than sit in an individual's collection.
Included in the loan is Richter’s four-part series “Birkenau” (2014), whose title refers to a World War II–era concentration camp. The dark, foreboding paintings based on photographs of the camp are abstract, and Richter made them using a squeegee that pulled paint across his canvases.
